Red

CHARLES TOWN, NYRed

From Patty:

I use to call him Big Red. Red was abandoned into a controlled colony last January in rain and snow. One very rainy night as I was feeding them I remember meeting him and I now believe that night to be the same night he was abandoned, because he was meowing so hard when he heard me. Even in the rain he was beautiful, with his orange and dark orange circular markings and his fur was so long it touched the ground. I found out his owner just put him there and he use to be an inside cat and this makes me wonder what kind of life he had even as an indoor cat. Then he just dropped out of sight and then suddenly, he was there again and came up to me this time, putting his face in the food before I could get it out of the can and he loved getting pets and scratches, I would too if I was inundated with fleas.

Red came up to me because he was literally starving and he knew that he had to let me help him, as if he were saying “I need help.” You wouldn’t believe he weighs 11 pounds, but it’s all bone. I can feel his ribs and backbone. The sides of his body are caved in. The good news is that he he’s negative from the combo test! Currently I have him at a vacant house next door in a very large kennel. Red is now flea free and is quite a love bug! He loves his pets, especially his cheeks being scratched and rolls onto his back in sheer happiness now. Red has a way to go yet before going to a permanent furever home. After he regains his weight he’ll get his shots and be neutered.

As much as I would love to love and keep Red I cannot. This is my 8th rescue this year and I’m maxed out financially and emotionally. Please if there is a permanent and loving home out there, please consider stepping up and taking this wonderful guy to be a part of your family. As mentioned, he’s extremely loving. I don’t know if he likes dogs and as far as other cats he was with an all female colony for months and I think he will get along with other cats. I’m hoping you can help me, help Red.

On behalf of Red, thank you,
Patty

Little Kitty

Happily Home – Foster Fail / New Name ‘Rowdy’

HILLSVILLE, VALittleKitty2

This little guy is so little he doesn’t even have a “real” name yet. For now, Selina is calling him “Little Kitty.”

Selina found this little guy hiding under a bush at a bank in town. She says, “I was actually across the street when I heard him crying (loudly)! I just couldn’t leave it. The vet thinks he is only 4-5 weeks old now but healthy. He tested neg for feline leukemia. He will stay with me for at least 3 more weeks. He’s very playful and loving. I’d like for him to be an inside cat. I have posted him on my local humane society’s page but I wanted to put him on here too, just in case. If I lived in a bigger house, I wouldn’t be trying to place him anywhere. I have 2 inside cats and a dog already. But, if I never find another home for him, he will have one where he is. Thank you.”

SHADOW

Neddie writes – I am desperately looking for a foster/furever home for this handsome, loverboy stray cat that has been coming by at night for a couple months now. My husband and I give him food, water and as much love as we can. I have taken him to the vet and he is not microchipped or fixed. He is super loving. Due to our current living situation we can not keep him. We are in the Farmington Hills, MI area. Would you please share and help him find a home? Anyone looking for more information can email me at neddiex24@yahoo.com
If you think that this beautiful house panther would match the decor in your home, or that you can help out by fostering him to help get him off the streets, please contact Neddie ASAP. Shadow is estimated to be about 2 years old.

Integrating A New Cat Into The Family

Everyone wants a fairy tail ending when bringing a new cat or kitten home. Preparing your house and cat proofing the kitty’s new digs are a must before bringing your new kitty home. This includes choosing a neutral and quiet room to set up as an introduction room for your new kitty. Making sure the cats start out on neutral territory is key. This means not placing the new kitty in a favorite area of your current kitty. This will help prevent jealousy or hostility towards the new kitty.

Also it’s important to make sure your new addition has been checked out by a veterinarian. New kitties may have fleas or other parasites that could be harmful to your resident kitty. After your new kitty is healthy the next step is exchanging blankets or toys between the kitties so they can get used to each others scents.

It’s key to let the kitties meet between the doors and sniff each other out and engage in forms of play underneath the doors. Cats use hissing and meows as a way of greeting and communication. Hissing is a part of cats expressing their feelings and is typical behavior between cats just meeting each other.

The next step is reinforcing positive behaviors and interactions between the cats with their favorite treats or wet food. Feed the cats together in a neutral area as an introduction to one another. For the introduction the new cat can be placed in a cat carrier or a dog crate during the initial introduction period.

Once the foundation has been set it’s time to introduce the kitties. It’s key to introduce the cats slowly and watch their reactions to one another. Make sure to reward positive behavior with treats and play time. It may take upwards of a month before your cats are comfortable with each other. It’s key to be patient when introducing a new cat into your home and with patience comes the reward of a lifetime of love.
